Balancing Medicine, Motherhood & a Diploma in Reproductive Medicine
Published: March 17, 2025Balancing a full-time role in family medicine, running a planning clinic, and raising five children—all while pursuing our popular Postgraduate Diploma in Sexual Reproductive Medicine—is a remarkable achievement. Dr. Nurul Azraa Binti has proven that with determination, organisation, and the right support, anything is possible.
We had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Nurul about her journey as a student of the Diploma in Reproductive Medicine with Learna under the University of South Wales. Her story is a true testament to resilience and passion for learning.
What inspired you to pursue this reproductive medicine online course despite your already busy schedule?
I work in the public sector at a Family Planning & Infertility Clinic in Malaysia, focusing on various aspects of reproductive health, contraception, fertility, and assisted reproduction. Initially, I was looking for an external learning programme to upgrade my knowledge and enhance my skills. A colleague suggested the Sexual Reproductive Medicine course and as I explored the brochure, I felt overwhelmed with excitement about the possibility of joining the programme. Online learning was new to me, but I was eager to take on the challenge.
How did you balance your work, family life, and studies?
I quickly realised the need for a structured approach and created a study plan to organise my work. I designated specific study times each day, ensuring they aligned with my clinical hours and household responsibilities. Since I have five children, managing my time effectively was crucial. I made sure my children were well taken care of before catching up on lessons. Weekends were dedicated to revision, and I summarised key points before new topics were introduced. Participating in group discussions with my peers was also incredibly helpful, as our tutor provided guidance and support throughout.
What aspects of the postgraduate diploma in reproductive health were most relevant to your role in family medicine and your planning clinic?
The course covered various daily discussion topics led by our tutor, and I made it a point to contribute to every discussion. This was highly relevant to my role in reproductive health, as it deepened my understanding of contraception, fertility treatments, and assisted reproduction. The interactive nature of the course helped me apply my knowledge directly to my clinical practice.
What surprised you most about what you learned in this course?
The flexibility and adaptability required for online learning were eye-opening. While it offers convenience, it also requires discipline. I set up a designated study space at home to create a clear boundary between my academic and home life. My children gradually understood my study process, and it became an opportunity to teach them about the importance of education. Additionally, I found that using graphics for my revisions was extremely beneficial in helping me retain information.
What advice would you give to others who might be juggling similar commitments?
Online learning is flexible, but setting realistic expectations and goals is essential to avoid procrastination. If work piled up during the first few days of the week, I made sure to catch up as soon as I had time. Creating a study schedule that accommodates both parenting and academic responsibilities is key. It’s also important to accept that not all goals will be achieved, and that’s okay. I reminded myself to celebrate small wins and not be too hard on myself. Writing reflections at the end of each module helped me assess my progress and stay motivated.
How has this programme given you an edge in your career?
The structured approach of setting academic goals at the start of each module helped me stay focused and efficient. Establishing a clear study plan allowed me to allocate time effectively while staying motivated. More importantly, I learned the importance of allowing myself grace when things didn’t go as planned. Balancing academia and parenting is a huge responsibility, and it’s okay to not be perfect in both areas all the time.
I am incredibly grateful for the support I received from my tutors, colleagues, and family. Their encouragement made this journey of online learning not only possible but also enjoyable and unforgettable.
